YACHT DEVICES YDES-04N, is a J1708 to NMEA 2000 engine data gateway. With it, it is possible to see revolutions, temperatures, pressures, engine hours, fuel consumption and much more on a plotter or other NMEA device in the NMEA 2000 network. YDES-04 supports the two protocols used in J1708 the standard protocol J1587 used by many engine manufacturers as well as the proprietary Volvo Penta protocol used by engines with EDC I, for example KAD 44, KAD 300, TAMD 73-75 and EDC II (t .eg D12C-A MP). A J1708 interface is used for connecting gauges, electronic displays, diagnostic equipment and other engine modules. This interface was popular before 2005-2007, when it was quickly replaced by the J1939 protocol which is a faster CAN protocol.
If your engine supports both J1708 and J1939, it is better to choose another one gateway YDEG-04. It is designed for J1939, Volvo Penta EVC, MEFI4B, EgC, EDC III and EDC IV engines. A single exception is Volvo Penta engines with EDV II (e.g. Volvo Penta DC12-A MP), where the CAN bus is used to synchronize rpm but has no other data. The YDES-04 is easily plugged into a free diagnostic socket. The plug that is on fits the Volvo Penta EDC diagnostic socket (EDC I and EDC II). For other motors, a connector that fits the motor can be used instead (not included). See the manufacturer's product page for more information on supported motors.
YDES-04 is available in two versions:
- YDES-04N with NMEA 2000 connector
- YDES-04R with SeaTalkNG connector
Applications
- Duplicate or replace broken ones instrument
- Monitor the engines in several locations
- In combination with a wifi gateway, you can monitor the engines wirelessly on a computer, tablet or mobile
- Log engine data and fuel consumption
- Record engine data for remote service
Data that can be transmitted (Data displayed on a plotter depends on the engine and which sensors are available as well as the plotter's software.)
DES-04 translates all engine data supported in NMEA 2000 except for tilt/trim on J1587 engines, as well as the most important data on KAD engines. See the table below. Transfer of two fuel tanks and two batteries is also supported. The data that can be displayed on a plotter depends on its functions and which sensors are in the engine.

NOTE! YDES-04 must be properly configured to work. A configuration file, YDES.TXT, is copied to a microSD card (not included), placed in the YDES-04 and then loaded. The text in the file controls which engine type, number of engines, tanks, etc. that the YDES-04 should listen to and transfer to NMEA 2000. Read in the manual how this is done.
