Autotransformers

Autotransformers for voltage conversion, split-phase and load balancing.

An autotransformer is an electrical transformer used to step up, step down, or balance alternating voltage between different electrical systems. Unlike an isolation transformer, the primary and secondary sides share some of the same winding, which results in higher efficiency, lower weight, and smaller physical size.

Autotransformers are often used when there is a need to convert between different mains voltages, for example between 120V and 240V, or to create split-phase systems in marine and industrial installations.

Advantages of autotransformers

  • High energy efficiency
  • Compact design
  • Lower weight than equivalent isolation transformer
  • Cost-effective voltage adaptation
  • Ability to create 120/240V split-phase
  • Suitable for marine, mobile and fixed installations

Autotransformers are a popular choice when the focus is on voltage matching and load balancing rather than galvanic isolation.
