VICTRON ENERGY GDI000016000, is a 16A galvanic isolator that prevents electrolytic corrosion. It blocks low DC currents entering your boat via the shore power line. These currents can lead to corrosion of the boat's metal parts underwater, such as the hull, propeller, shaft, etc.
The galvanic isolator internally consists of two diodes connected in an anti-parallel fashion. When connected in this way, the diodes allow current to pass through in both directions but only if above a certain voltage threshold. The diodes conduct current at a voltage of approx. 1.4 Vdc.
The isolator is installed directly behind the boat's 230 V connector. The forward voltage from the galvanic isolator is higher than the potential difference between metals. This means that this voltage will not allow conduction and the galvanic isolator as such will prevent any electrolytic current. However, if there is a (higher) fault voltage in the AC circuit, the diodes will allow current to flow and the RCD will break the circuit.
If 100% galvanic isolation is desired, an isolation transformer should be selected instead.
