VICTRON ENERGY GDI000064000, is a galvanic isolator rated at 64A that prevents electrolytic corrosion. It blocks low DC currents entering your boat through the shore power cable. These currents can cause corrosion of underwater metal parts of the boat, such as the hull, propeller, shaft, etc.
Internally, the galvanic isolator consists of two diodes connected in an anti-parallel configuration. When connected this way, the diodes allow current to pass in both directions but only above a certain voltage threshold. The diodes conduct at a voltage of about 1.4 VDC.
The isolator is installed directly behind the boat’s 230 V connector. The forward voltage of the galvanic isolator is higher than the potential difference between metals. This means that this voltage will not allow conduction, and the galvanic isolator will prevent all electrolytic current. However, if a (higher) fault voltage occurs in the AC circuit, the diodes will allow current flow and the residual-current device (RCD) will trip the circuit.
If 100% galvanic isolation is desired, an isolation transformer should be chosen instead.
