Protection against galvanic corrosion
Galvanic corrosion occurs when two different metals are in electrical contact and simultaneously exposed to a conductive liquid, such as seawater or freshwater. The more active metal corrodes, while the less active one is protected. This phenomenon can quickly destroy sacrificial anodes, propellers, shafts, and other underwater components – regardless of the hull's material. A galvanic isolator is a cost-effective solution that reduces the risk of corrosion in boats with shore power connection. However, the most effective and safest method is to install an isolation transformer.
Function and installation
The isolation transformer breaks all electrical continuity between shore power and the boat's electrical system. Shore power is fed to the primary side of the transformer, while the vessel is connected to the secondary – completely isolated from shore ground. This allows for proper functioning of RCDs and fuses in case of short circuits or current leakage. Connecting only phase and neutral without a ground wire is dangerous, as RCDs will not function and no fuse will blow in case of a fault. Therefore, it is crucial that the ground conductor is correctly connected – but isolated via the transformer.
For optimal safety, it is recommended that the neutral of the secondary side be connected to protective earth when the boat is on land.
