Galvanic Protection

Galvanic Protection – for a safe and corrosion-free electrical system on board

When you connect your boat to shore power, an electrical connection occurs between the boat's electrical system and the grid's protective earth. This can lead to galvanic corrosion – a silent but serious threat to the boat's underwater metal components. To protect your boat, effective galvanic protection is required.

At Digital Skipper, you'll find two main solutions:

  • Isolation Transformers: These create a complete electrical separation between the shore power and the boat's electrical system. They prevent electrolytic corrosion and act as a guarantee for a safe electrical system. Some models use toroidal winding technology for quiet operation and high efficiency, as well as soft start circuits that prevent fuses from tripping upon connection

  • Galvanic Isolators: A simpler solution consisting of two anti-parallel connected diodes. These block low voltage levels that cause corrosion, but allow higher voltages to pass in case of a fault – making them a cost-effective protection option

Whether you choose an isolator or a transformer, galvanic protection is an important investment to extend the lifespan of your boat and avoid costly repairs.
