Victron Energy multi-outlet charger, how does it work?
Digital Skipper |27/01, 2022
Victron Energy has a range of battery chargers with more than one output and in this blog post we go through how the outputs work and how they can be used.
Battery chargers with more outputs can be described by; slightly different way, where the most common is the number of outputs in parentheses such as "Phoenix Smart IP43 Charger 12/30(3)" where the three refers to three equivalent outputs. If it is (1+1) it is a total of two; outputs where the charging current normally differs between the outputs and a 30A charger can have 27A on; the one and 3A på the other which is normally used to charge a starter battery.
Today's battery chargers are usually configured for the type of battery to be charged (AGM, GEL, Lithium etc.) which means that the current battery type is charged at an optimal way both regarding charged efficiency and lifetime.
A charger with multiple outputs works on; as follows:
- All outputs have the same charged character and the charger is set to for example, AGM loads all outputs with the settings for just AGM
- Ä the loader of the type (1+1) ääääööööööösöööö&ously For example, if there is a 30A charger, the charge can be divided by 27+3A, but to see the exact situation on your particular charger you need to look at; data sheet or manual
- Ä the charger of type (3), the distribution between the inputs takes place with the help of a separator, which means that the input that needs the most charging ( is the easiest to charge) for the most charging current and you only connect one output all charging current goes to it. It is also good to connect several outputs to the same battery to get a larger cable area between battery and charger.
Note that it must it is not optimal to load två banks with different types of battery type and då instead of using more battery chargers or a DC/DC charger for one or more of the other battery banks.
Settings and monitoring of the Victron Energy Smart charger is done using the Victron Connect app and you need help with calculating cable dimensions, the Victron Toolkit app is available which alsoå described in the blog "Which cable dimension should you use for which user?".
