Prioritize solar power over shore power – How to do it with Victron Energy BMV-712

Simple guide to using BMV-712 and Phoenix Smart IP43 charger for smart energy management without MultiPlus or Quattro.

Victron Energy introduced in GX OS 3.1 a function that allows users to prioritize solar energy over shore power. This smart function normally requires a MultiPlus or Quattro, but there are simpler alternatives for those who do not want to make a large investment.

Alternative solution with BMV-712

BMV-712 is a battery monitor that offers a smart solution. By using the integrated relay and configuring it in VictronConnect, you can control when the charger should be activated.

In our example, we have set the relay so that:

  • Charging with shore power occurs until the battery reaches 90%.

Connect the relay to Phoenix Smart IP43

By connecting the relay output to the Remote input on a Phoenix Smart IP43 charger, the charger is only activated when solar energy is not enough to maintain the battery level. This provides a cost-effective solution for prioritizing solar energy.

If the charger lacks remote control

Does your charger not have a dedicated input for remote control? Then you can use the relay output from the BMV-712 to control a 230V relay and thus control the charger.

Summary

With the BMV-712 and a simple relay, you can create smart energy management that prioritizes solar energy over shore power – without investing in MultiPlus or Quattro.
