FLIR Marine: Camera resolution and range for optimal visibility at sea

Learn the difference between standard and high-resolution thermal cameras from FLIR and how the right choice improves navigation, SAR, and long-range detection.

When choosing a FLIR Marine thermal camera, resolution and range are crucial. How far do you need to see for safe navigation? What level of detail is required to detect vessels, objects or people?

FLIR offers both standard resolution and high resolution :

  • Standard resolution (~320 x 240 pixels)
Perfect for smaller recreational boats or for those looking for a cost-effective entry into thermal technology.
    Example: FLIR M232 and M332.

  • High resolution (~640 x 480 pixels)
For best performance and long range detection. The first choice for commercial vessels and emergency services.
Examples: FLIR Ocean Scout Pro (handheld), M364, M364C and M400 (fixed).

Each pixel acts as an infrared thermometer, measuring temperature variations and converting them into an image. More pixels = more detail :

  • Standard: approx. 76,000 pixels
  • High resolution: approx. 307,000 pixels

Benefits of more pixels

As with digital cameras, higher pixel density results in better image quality. With more pixels, the camera can reproduce subtle temperature variations and reveal small details for easier identification.
In marine environments, this means advantages in long-range detection – a small object on the horizon becomes visible earlier with a high-resolution camera.

Crucial for SAR and safe navigation

In Search & Rescue (SAR) , a high-resolution camera is vital. Spotting a person in the water is difficult – often only the head and arms are visible. Here, the pixel count is crucial.
FLIR thermal cameras also help avoid hazards such as buoys, piles, oil platforms and debris.

Tailor-made solutions for everyone

  • Standard resolution – cost-effective for shorter distances and recreational use.
  • High resolution – for open water, surveillance and long-range detection.

With FLIR Marine thermal cameras, you get better visibility, increased safety and reliable detection – day or night .
