The majestic Mount Kazbegi in Georgia rises over five kilometers towards the sky and has attracted adventurers to its dramatic, steep slopes for over 150 years.
At an altitude of 3,700 meters lies a former meteorological station – known as Meteo. Today, the building has been given new life as a climbing hotel under the name Bethlemi Hut. For many climbers, it is an invaluable lifeline.
Kazbegi is as beautiful as it is dangerous. Many have tragically lost their lives here, mainly due to the remote location and lack of communication. A small accident can quickly become life-threatening without quick help.
The equipment was delivered by helicopter in three stages – a logistical challenge. Two engineers accompanied the cargo and were assisted by local staff. The installation consists of:
It takes a day to hike from the small town of Stepantsminda to Bethlemi Hut. Here, climbers can rest, have a coffee, and wait for clear weather before starting the ascent. On the way down, it serves as a simple but vital hotel.
