Mountain rescue in Georgia with the help of a remote energy solution

How an off-grid power supply enabled communication and safety for rescue operations in hard-to-reach mountain areas – a solution combining robust technology, mobility, and reliability under extreme conditions.

The majestic Mount Kazbegi in Georgia rises over five kilometers towards the sky and has attracted adventurers to its dramatic, steep slopes for over 150 years.

At an altitude of 3,700 meters lies a former meteorological station – known as Meteo. Today, the building has been given new life as a climbing hotel under the name Bethlemi Hut. For many climbers, it is an invaluable lifeline.

  

The risks of Kazbegi

Kazbegi is as beautiful as it is dangerous. Many have tragically lost their lives here, mainly due to the remote location and lack of communication. A small accident can quickly become life-threatening without quick help.

Two important initiatives for increased safety

1. Solar energy and communication: The owner of Bethlemi, with support from a Czech NGO, hires MZE Ltd – experts in solar energy – to install an off-grid power system. Previously, they relied on an old generator and fuel was difficult to obtain. Now, solar energy provides reliable power, which has enabled mobile operator Magti to install an amplifier. The result? Significantly better mobile coverage in the area.
2. Training and first aid: The Polish government funds doctors and instructors who train tourists in first aid and climbing techniques. Thanks to these efforts, Kazbegi is significantly safer to climb.

  

Technical solution

The equipment was delivered by helicopter in three stages – a logistical challenge. Two engineers accompanied the cargo and were assisted by local staff. The installation consists of:

• 12 solar panels with a total output of 3 kWp
• 85A MPPT chargers
• MultiPlus 5 kVA
• 12 deep-cycle batteries with a total capacity of 1200 Ah

  

Convenience for climbers

It takes a day to hike from the small town of Stepantsminda to Bethlemi Hut. Here, climbers can rest, have a coffee, and wait for clear weather before starting the ascent. On the way down, it serves as a simple but vital hotel.
