ICOM 87300, the IC-SAT100 is a satellite radio that uses Iridium's satellite network as its platform. It can be used as a communication tool in remote and isolated areas where there is no mobile phone coverage or normal radio infrastructure. Even if terrestrial network infrastructure may become unusable due to human error or natural disasters, satellite radio can offer a stable backup, independent of other networks.
Unlike satellite phones, users of the Icom IC-SAT100 can immediately start talking to other users with a push of the transmit button. Iridium's satellite network covers the entire globe, including both poles, and can provide global radio communication anywhere on the planet.
Using 66 Iridium LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellites, the IC-SAT100 can have low communication latency and wider, more reliable network coverage compared to GEO (Geosynchronous Equatorial Orbit) satellites. Iridium satellites are approximately 780 km from Earth compared to GEO satellites which are 36,000 km from Earth.
The orange button on the top panel is for emergencies. You can send an emergency call to pre-programmed users with a simple press of the button.
With connection to the Icom VE-PG4 gateway, connections to other systems are possible. In today's communication society, much is about connecting different systems, which the VE-PG4 enables. The VE-PG4 can link a variety of different systems with each other. For example, the box has a built-in LTE module for connection to the Icom IP501 radio system, built-in IP Radio (WiFi) controller for connection to Icom's WiFi radio system, telephone connection, and a Gateway to other radio systems.
