The right VHF antenna for AIS700 – Specifications and important advice

How to choose the right marine broadband VHF antenna for AIS700 and avoid VSWR fault alarms and damage to the transceiver.

This is an advisory message to draw your attention to the correct selection and use of a marine VHF antenna for AIS700 AIS Class B with integrated antenna splitter. Incorrect antenna selection can affect performance and cause damage to the equipment.

Why is a broadband antenna required?

AIS700 requires a broadband VHF antenna to provide optimal performance for both VHF radio and AIS transceiver. An antenna optimized solely for AIS or VHF can cause problems such as VSWR fault alarms or, in the worst case, permanent damage to the transceiver.

Recommended specifications for VHF antenna

Choose a marine broadband VHF antenna that covers the entire VHF radio frequency range with the following specifications:

  • Frequency band: 156 MHz – 162 MHz
  • VSWR: 1.5:1 (ideal), 2:1 (max)
  • Impedance: 50 Ohm
  • Gain: Max 3 dBi
  • Connector: PL-259

Important

Avoid antennas that are optimized solely for AIS or VHF radio frequencies. This can lead to:

  • VSWR fault alarms
  • Permanent damage to the AIS700 transceiver

Note: If an unsuitable antenna is connected, the system's VSWR fault alarm may be triggered and in some cases cause irreparable damage to the unit.
